Your Light

gurlll, look at you
with that bandeau

your sideways glance
implying I should
take it off

I can still see us
in your dorm room
sitting on your bed
joking & being
ohhh so silly

your infectious laughter
still in my ears

your sweet smile
etched in my mind

Riddle seems
a lifetime ago
those university days
with some studying
& a whole lot of partying

well, mostly me
cuz you were always
so much more disciplined

those days ended
we stayed in touch
for a few years
then lost it

some more time passed
we finally reconnected
you, thrilled to share
your pregnancy stories
gurlll, i finally got
some boobs now
me, excited to share
my travel adventures

I made it out to visit
and tho the details
are blurry, I remember
you were thrilled
in your role
as loving mother

our lives were so different
back then, didn’t matter
we still shared so many laughs
and got to have gurl talk

we last spoke
when I was in Austin
going through the beginning
phase of my failing marriage
and then there was Andrew

Riddle memories came back
we laughed, I cried
you gave me
more than your shoulder
no judgments, just love

last week I sent an email
there was no reply

two days ago
my heart broke

I didn’t
tell you
that I am grateful
for you
that you made a difference
in my life

you are salsa dancing
you are laughing & smiling
I know this to be true

I know that though
your physical flesh
is elsewhere
your light remains
with your kappa sweetheart
sister, diamond girl

thank you
for your light
for being selfless
for making a positive impact
in my life

I am honored and grateful
for you

I love you

rest sweetly, my beautiful Bri
