Tango

My Tango Corner

Bailar no tiene edad, no tiene momentos ni tampoco condición…porque no se baila con los pies, se baila con el corazón.

Dance is ageless, timeless, unconditional…because one dances not with one’s feet, but with the heart.

La Vida es un Tango

Todo lo que he vivido a través de este baile ha sido o dulzura o melancolía, hasta en ocasiones ambos sentimientos a la vez. Passion – Pleasure – Presence: tango is this and so much more. It is poetry between two people sharing verses via the music and their bodies.

30 April 2006, a rainy Sunday afternoon found me at my first lesson in New York City. How awkward I felt trying to focus on the elements of walking forward: upright posture, chest raised, shoulders down, head perpendicular to the floor, knees slightly bent. Then, slowly and with precision one thigh softly caressing the other as my unweighted leg’s foot stepped ahead. How could something so mundane as walking seem so impossibly difficult?

All these years later, I remain charmed by this dance that has brought lovers, friendships and countless beautiful moments to my life.

Countless laughs, fun tandas, and the yummiest dark chocolate.

Thanks for the memories, Zsolt.

The Dancing Irish

May 2018.

My first visit to Ireland and where I checked out milonga El Huracán in Dublin’s Clontarf neighborhood (north of city center).  With their witty sense of humor and welcoming warmth, it’s so impossibly easy to be smitten with the country and its people.

And of course, it came as no surprise that they share a love for tango. Fond memories of sharing a playful vals tanda with local dancer, Cathal M. encouraged me to ask a local to capture the moment.

Tango es Conexión

Jan 2017. Chillin with Claudio M. V. (Che, te extraño muchísimo) at Stepping Out Studios, home to one of New York City’s longest running events, the All Night Milonga. One of my favorite things about tango is sharing laughs and camaraderie with fellow dancers during breaks between tandas. Sometimes, I’ll even spend much of the evening chatting away, especially if I’ve already had that one fantastic tanda (yea, it be like that sometimes).

Milongas sometimes offer vendors a platform to market their wares (generally for women, sorry guys): sexy clothing and tango shoes (cause a girl can never have too many pairs). Whether to pick up a new pair of beauties (shoes, that is), to mingle, to meet new folks or strictly to get your tango on, a milonga is almost always a memorable evening.
